reading 'vitals' was a bit of a disappointment, because both '/' and 'tangents' (short story collection) are amazing. this one was intellectually interesting but cheesily written. what was weird though was that i was at work, cleaning out halls of residence, and i had finished my second room a little bit early and i had half an hour to kill before lunch. i looked around for a place to read which would mean i wouldn't be seen by supervisor as he or she strolled past outside and settled on the bathroom. i perched on the toilet and read away happily, reaching a point where hal cousins is staying in a hotel room, on the run, carrying documents purported to be from his now dead brother. hal wakes up in the morning and picks up the documents. he goes into the bathroom, sits down on the toilet and starts reading...

is this life mimicking fiction or something more? or something less?

props to bear also for featuring this awesome quotation from george orwell -- "if you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever".
